Nerja is a town in the province of Malaga (Spain) and the easternmost town in the region of Axarquia. It is a tourist destination belongs to the Costa del Sol has an official population of more than 22,000, nearly one third of foreign residents, mainly British. Bounded on the N in the town of Competa, the E to the Granada town of Almuñécar, the S by the Mediterranean Sea, the O with the municipality of Torrox, and NOT with Frigiliana.Está municipality located approximately 49 km to east of the city of Malaga, and is two hours' drive from Granada and the ski resort of Sierra Nevada.
Nerja is located in the hamlet of Maro. Nerja has a long history proved by the paintings found
in the famous Nerja Cave was discovered in 1959 and today is the most visited tourist site Spanish
following the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Alhambra in Granada. Under the Muslim kingdom, the name was Narixa,
which means "abundant supply" and that is the source of the current name. In the center of town is the
Balcon de Europa, a viewpoint which gives stunning views of the sea to its guests.
he name "Balcony of Europe" was proposed by King Alfonso XII visited the area in 1885
after a disastrous earthquake, and was captivated by the scene. Nerja has several beaches,
among which include those of Burriana, Calahonda, El Salon, La Torrecilla and Playazo counting
the latter with an environment that has not yet suffered the consequences of uncontrolled urbanization
